Reinforcing the Lake Line strengthens the reliability of Finland’s transmission grid

As the energy transition accelerates, the need for reliable, high-capacity electricity transmission networks continues to grow. Increased renewable energy production in northern Finland, declining electricity generation in the south, and rising electricity demand have created a growing need for north–south transmission capacity and stronger grid connections. As part of Fingrid’s Lake Line (Järvilinja) project, which strengthens Finland’s national transmission grid, we are constructing a new transmission line connection across the municipalities of Lapinlahti, Siilinjärvi and Kuopio.

The Lake Line project extends approximately 300 kilometres and also includes six substation projects.

As part of the contract, we are constructing 82 kilometres of new 400 kV and 110 kV transmission lines alongside existing transmission line corridors. Construction began with foundation works in Lapinlahti in autumn 2023, and the project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.

Strengthening this transmission corridor will maintain the high reliability of Finland’s national grid, support the development of regional electricity networks, and enable new investments in wind power, electrification and industrial development. It will also improve the efficiency of Finland’s electricity market and help maintain uniform electricity pricing across the country.

Huutokoski substation expansion

As part of the Lake Line project, we are also delivering the Huutokoski Substation expansion and modernisation project in Joroinen on a design-and-build basis, from engineering through commissioning.

The contract includes expanding the 400 kV switchyard, relocating the 400 kV shunt capacitors from the Alapitkä Substation to Huutokoski, and replacing the 20 kV switchgear together with its control building. In addition, the new Alapitkä–Huutokoski transmission line will be connected within the substation using a 110 kV underground cable between the transmission line gantry and the GIS switchgear.

Construction at Huutokoski began in August 2024 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
