A More Functional Urban Environment for the new area in Turku
A new Fabriikki district is being developed in the former VR service workshop area in Turku. In addition to offices and event spaces, the plan includes a new residential area to meet the needs of the growing city. During 2024–2025, we carried out a construction project in which we renovated Köydenpunojankatu, which runs through the area, connected it to Köydenpunojankaari, and built the foundation for new apartment buildings.
We constructed the new Köydenpunojankatu and carried out approximately 60,000 cubic meters of rock excavation to prepare the site for residential construction. Part of the excavated material was reused directly in the area’s construction works, reducing both project costs and environmental impacts by minimizing the need for long-distance transport of materials.
In addition to the street renovation and excavation works, the project included the construction of new and the renovation of existing municipal infrastructure, anchored concrete retaining walls, and noise barriers. We also upgraded street lighting and built green infrastructure.
The project was carried out in a densely built and heavily trafficked urban environment. For this reason, special attention was paid to communication with residents and other stakeholders, as well as to the planning of traffic arrangements.
“Cooperation with Destia worked great, and the challenging project was completed to a high standard. The objectives set during the preparation phase were achieved during implementation, and coordination with stakeholders surrounding the project area was successful. As a result of the project, through traffic and the associated noise were removed from the Pohjola wooden house area along Köydenpunojankatu. High-quality pedestrian and cycling routes were also implemented in the VR service workshop area,” says Tuomas Turpeinen, Senior Project Manager at the City of Turku.
