Destia improves Fingrid’s transmission network with a substation expansion
Destia is expanding the 400 kV switchgear at the Uusnivala substation located in Nivala, North Ostrobothnia, which strengthens the transmission capacity of the grid and enables the integration of wind and solar power into the transmission network. The total cost of the project is approximately 11 million euros. Work has recently begun with planning and preparatory tasks. The project is expected to be completed in the summer of 2027.
Destia will build a new control room and three new 400 kV fields and make provisions for two transmission lines that will strengthen the transmission network. Additionally, the project includes challenging testing work.
“It is important to maintain and increase the north-south transmission capacity, which enables investments in clean electricity production. We are investing in the transmission network in the long term and are continuously developing it so that renewable electricity production can be efficiently connected to the main grid and made accessible to consumers and industry. It is great to continue our collaboration with our reliable partner Destia,” says Timo Kiiveri, Deputy CEO of Fingrid.
“We have just completed the 110 kV expansion at the Uusnivala substation, so the site is familiar, and we are pleased to continue work there. Building substations requires strong expertise in civil engineering, electrical networks, and building construction. In this project, we will be working in challenging conditions near an existing, live system, but even then, our professionals will carry out their work safely and with solid experience,” says Ari Eskola, Head of the Substations Unit at Destia.
