Destia is building the largest battery storage facility in the Nordics in Yllikkälä

Battery systems supplier Nidec has chosen Destia to provide the infrastructure and electrical works for the battery energy storage system (BESS) that it is building for Neoen in Yllikkälä, Lappeenranta. Neoen is one of the world’s leading independent producers of exclusively renewable energy. When completed in the first half of 2025, Yllikkälä Power Reserve Two will be the largest in the Nordic countries with an installed capacity of 56,4 MW / 112,9 MWh, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 5-10 Finnish detached houses. This is the second battery storage facility that Destia is building with Nidec for Neoen in Yllikkälä.

The Yllikkälä Power Reserve Two battery storage unit significantly supports Finland’s power grid by enhancing its flexibility and reliability. The battery will operate in Finland’s transmission systems operator Fingrid’s reserve markets. It will provide Fingrid with fast-response ancillary services to help maintain the balance between production and consumption, efficiently improving the power system’s frequency and security as well as facilitating the integration of renewable energy assets.

Nidec has the overall responsibility for the construction project and will supply the battery containers, battery cells and inverters. Destia will carry out the area’s earthworks and foundation work including planning, construction of the substation fence, electrical design, 110 kV cable installations, as well as cable terminations for the 33 kV, 0.6 kV, and 0.4 kV networks, including fiber optic cabling.

”We wanted to continue to work with Destia, because of the smooth collaboration during the construction of the first battery storage facility together in Yllikkälä in 2020. The demand for battery storage is increasing as Northern Europe transitions more and more to renewable energy sources. As the market leader in Scandinavia, we provide solutions to integrate intermittent energy more easily into power grids and maintain their real-time stability,” says Okba Bahiaoui, Sales and Purchase manager, Nidec.

”The contract with Nidec is strategically significant for us, as we seek growth in the construction of renewable energy infrastructure. Battery storage systems are needed to balance the production and consumption of renewable energy. In BESS construction, we utilize our strong expertise in infrastructure construction as well as in the construction of substations and networks,” says Tapio Leskinen, Director, Energy Networks, Destia.
