Valuable information on road network with pavement thickness measurements
The road and street network is valuable infrastructure that is worn down by intensive use and has a major impact on the safety of road users. In 2021–2023, we are measuring the thickness of road pavement over a distance of almost 10,000 kilometres. In addition to action planning, the measurement data can be used for strategic and road condition analyses and for the service life predictions.
Our measurements are part of a nationwide project, which covers a total of approximately 25,400 kilometres of road network to be measured. Our own measurement area includes roads that the ELY Centres for Uusimaa, Southwest Finland and Southern Ostrobothnia are responsible for. Together with our subcontractor, we will measure 1,873 km of road network with high traffic volume, 2,434 km with medium traffic volume and 5,134 km with low traffic volume – the total length of road network to be measured is 9,441 km.
We carry out the measurements with ground-penetrating radar, which provides us with continuous information on the thickness of the pavement. To support the interpretation of the pavement thickness, we also take approximately 2,500 core samples. We use our own fleet for both ground-penetrating radar measurements and core sampling.
We carry out the design, implementation and quality assurance of the measurements. We produce the thickness data and other key figures and store them in the customer’s database.
